Dear Friends of the Phil:

Welcome to the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir’s 94th season—a season designed to inspire and delight!

We open our season by once again joining the WSO’s annual Fall Festival to present Cantiques et Chansons with guest soloist Sarah Jo Kirsch in the beautiful, contemplative setting of St. Boniface Cathedral. In addition to Poulenc’s masterful Gloria, we will sing Ravel’s Trois beaux oiseaux; Debussy’s Dieu! Qu’il la fait bon regarder and Beau Soir; Duruflé’s Quatre Motets; and Fauré’s Libera Me and Pavanne. We’re pleased to welcome back our good friend, Andrea Ratuski, who will guide us on this marvelous musical journey, and we’re especially excited to welcome the Collège Jeanne-Sauvé choir, who will join us in singing Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine.

Brimming with good cheer, brilliant brass and merry music, Christmas with the Phil at Westminster United Church has become one of Winnipeg’s favorite traditions. This season we’re pleased to welcome back the Winnipeg Brass Quintet and, for the first time, Laura Secord School choir. And the angels really do sing as our audience joins in our traditional sing-along of familiar carols and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus!

Finally, we return to St. Boniface Cathedral in March to perform our annual masterwork concert with members of the WSO and guest soloists Sarah Jo Kirsch, Kirsten Schellenberg, Aaron Hutton and Howard Rempel. This year, we have chosen Schubert’s Mass No. 6 in E-flat Major and Brahms’ Nänie. I am very excited as both of these pieces represent some of the most brilliant choral writing of any century—this is a not-to-be-missed afternoon of magnificent music!

As I enter my sixteenth season as artistic director, I am proud to play a role in the Phil’s historic musical journey. From the bottom of my heart, I thank our talented choristers, our
dedicated volunteer board and our generous donors and sponsors.

But most of all, I thank you—our inspiring and enthusiastic audience. Without you, it would simply be another rehearsal. We look forward to sharing another thrilling season with you.

Sincerely,

Yuri Klaz
